Artistic Director Dean McDowell

Dean McDowell earned his BA in Music Education from Bowling Green State University in 1975 and studied conducting at the University of Michigan. He taught instrumental, choral, and elementary music in Ohio for 11 years, earning the Martha Holding Jennings Scholarship for Outstanding Teacher and Leadership. Outside the classroom, he directed community theater and played euphonium in the Capital Pride Band of Columbus, which his partner, Bob, co-founded.

Dean later transitioned into a tour planner, organizing domestic and international student music trips.

In 2006, Dean relocated to the Coachella Valley, becoming the Artistic Director for the Desert Winds Freedom Band in 2007. Under his leadership, the ensemble has grown into a highly respected organization for LGBT and ally musicians. He focuses on programming engaging performances, increasing visibility, and ensuring financial stability. Thirteen years ago, Dean launched an educational outreach initiative that brings guest composers and conductors to work with the band and local high schools. The program has also awarded $76,000 in scholarships to local high school graduates pursuing music degrees.
